Final Thoughts
A Functional Analysis of High School

The Future of the US workforce  (survey)

As a result of recent school violence parents, teachers, administrators, sociologists, and psychologist have debated solutions to problems plaguing American High Schools. Our examination has included a variety of exercises on labels as well as video clips and readings showcasing the High School experience. All too often more time is spent on placing blame then actively promoting new ways to tackle the issue of the day. Please provide your reactions to the following statements regarding the American High School.

Background: In our study of Sociological perspectives we have spend a several classes looking at the American High School experience from the 1960s to today. Based on what information and key discussion points you have been exposed to, please complete the following tasks.

1960s        Ballston yearbook activity and 1968 Documentary, Room 222
1980s        Freaks and Geeks; American High 1984

Bribing Students for Grades: Freakonomics

TASK #3 I am sure one of the elements of your successful high school involved teachers. In your opinion, a. What makes a great teacher? b. Which teacher in you academic career has had the greatest impact on your education?

There are many factors that make a great teacher. Good teachers normally have a good sense of humor, aren't so uptight and stay happy and funny. Teachers should be able to read their students, understand them. If they need a break, put on a relevant movie. Play games, keep it interesting. Allow students to work with each other and learn how to interact with each other. Make the material relate to current topics/news. Tell stories, funny stories. Give them opportunities that make them vulnerable, that's how you learn and grow. A good teacher can do all this and still teach you the required curriculum. I don't think that there is one specific teacher that has dramatically impacted me but there are a few that I'll always remember and not for the best reasons. One very good teacher that I can remember had very fresh teaching style and new ideas and I really enjoyed going to her class.  She made us practice good studying habits and some have even stuck with me throughout high school.

TASK #4 In class we looked at Ballston High School's Mission statement……. Ballston Spa High School is committed to meeting the educational needs of each student in becoming a responsible adult. In partnership with the family and community, we strive to prepare each student intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially, while encouraging individual talents and abilities."  If you could create a new mission statement for BSHS or a new mission statement for a brand new high school, what would it be?
