Components of Social Structure: Roles
We occupy statuses, we play roles…
A social role is a set of behavior that is attached to a status. They are the behaviors, obligations, & privileges attached to status. Each person must play a number of different roles, and sometimes these roles carry conflicting expectations
Role Conflict (single role - multiple conflicts)
Role Strain (single role - one strain)
Role conflict can be defined as a situation in which the expected behavior of one role comes in conflict with the expected behavior of another role.
The stress or strain experienced by an individual when incompatible behavior, expectations, or obligations are associated with a single social role.
Examples Mother: do everything that is expected 24 hours a day ; Employer: be at work on time and don't leave early (even for kid's soccer game); Friend: help out sick friend (even when you have to be at work and a kid's soccer game at the same time).
Example Mother: cook meals for kids; do homework with kids; earn money for kids college fund; do kids laundry; discipline kids; participate in activities at kids school; attend kids soccer games; stay calm when kid asks for nose ring; pay for kids new school wardrobe, etc....too much to do in one role!!!!!
