Social Identities  and Identity Construction (Activity)

Our social identities come from a lot of places: our race, our sex, our age, our occupations/professions, political affiliations, our medical diagnoses, our high schools, colleges, our favorite sports teams. And each of those identities comes along with a set of expectations or stereotypes.

Stereotype Threat 

Stereotype threat is the experience of anxiety or concern in a situation where a person has the potential to confirm a negative stereotype about their social group.

Standpoint Theory 

"How individual perspectives and positions can be shaped by their experiences"

Double Consciousness:

"The difference between the way a person views himself and the way he is viewed by the larger society. " 

Social Construction of Reality

 "We present ourselves to other people is shaped partly by our interactions with others"

The Sociological Imagination  

"The ability to look beyond the individual as the cause for success/failure and see how one’s society influences the outcome - "walking in someone else's shoes"
